Clubhouse Pics

The clubhouse has been spruced up considerably--in fact, if you've been away a while you might not recognize it.  But it's just the old clubhouse, without the rot, repaired with new walls and windows and a fantastic new deck outside (recycled plastic, with a big handicapped access ramp) and a new tile floor inside (mosaic of the S. Sailing Basin, no more slipping on rotten plywood with peeling paint) with lots of cubbieholes on the back walls for storage.

Big thanks to everyone who put in hundreds of hours of work and thousands of dollars in donations towards the "new" clubhouse!

The front of the clubhouse (Matt Harvey on bench duty, dayleader Corey Thomas on binocs)

The rear showing the deck and ramp, with more view of the bay (the deck is 10" higher than before)

The compass rose on the new tile floor ("O" is for oeste, ouest, etc.)

Cubbieville!  Corey and David Slater on guard against pilferage.  Thanks to Ed Shirk for cubbification!

Entry to the clubhouse.

Railing and view of dock.

Historic Pictures

Original construction in 70's.  Compare to previous pic with high rise buildings in background.

Beam that was supposed to support front wall and deck, as of Feb. '05.  Yes, it's just not there.  The wall was ready to fall down.

Clubhouse front, Feb '05.  Note shutters for windows laying against side of clubhouse.

The front door, as it was.  Note rotten wall next to blue shutter--you could push your fingers through.  Behind the bulletin board left of the door was nothing but rotfluff.

Side of clubhouse, with Laser nose.  Tree on the side was a rat highway leading to a hole they'd gnawed in the floorboards.

The deck, with sail locker, planter, table, and BBQ hutch (minus BBQ, since the BBQ that fit inside died). Note ledge between deck and clubhouse porch.

The back side of the club, with the sail locker and handicapped access ramp.  The sail locker was replaced with a spare dinghy sails locker in the back of the yard and a Laser/Byte sail locker next to the Laser and Byte hulls.

The back side--the sail locker blocked most of the view.

Plans for clubhouse repairs, to obtain building permit.  We also got a termite report, but that wasn't enough for Berkeley's Planning Department, they wanted to see every last board we would be replacing.  Berkeley's Municipal Code says that any repair requires a building permit, that all repair work must meet all code requirements, and that all new construction west of the frontage road requires full coverage by automatic fire sprinklers.  Berkeley Fire Chief David Orth approved an exemption from the sprinkler requirement as long as we don't expand by one more foot.  Since fire sprinklers would have cost over $150,000 for a water main extension, the exemption was our only way to go.

Scrawl on cocktail napkin used to obtain Berkeley Waterfront Manager's approval for temporary clubhouse.

Temporary clubhouse--a major improvement over the clubsquat already.  The 8'x10' container served as the office during a very busy summer month.

Most of the front wall and its underpinnings fell away when the siding and windows were removed.

The front of the clubhouse supported by jacks (John McBride, Jose Lopez, and Hermann Guzman on pneumatic framing hammers and circular saws).

New front wall being framed (Hermann, Jose, Roberto, and John).

Walls repaired, sheathed, and covered!

Siding complete (Roberto Gastelumendi)

Rotten plywood flooring being removed (John McBride)

Backer board for tilework going down on new plywood flooring

flooring covered and ready for tile

Siding primed, Brian Buchanan installing new wiring and lights.

The old deck was completely ripped out, and new framing was installed, with Trex decking.
