Racers and fixed rudder dinghy sailers: Please view chart for 1.6' MLLW .

The South Sailing Basin, where the Cal Sailing Club launches its dinghies, has been silting in over the decades, and at very low tides the depth of water at the dock is too shallow to operate our rescue skiff. When that occurs, dinghies and windsurfing equipment cannot be used by members with a rating of Junior Skipper (in the case of dinghies) or Junior Plus Windsurfer (for windsurfing equipment) or below. Equipment may still be used by those with higher ratings who do not require the rescue skiff to be operational. You can also use the time to get your work credit out of the way, take your written or rigging tests, sail with a Senior or Cruising Skipper, or just sit on the bench and enjoy the scenery!

The following table may be used to help plan your sailing schedule, and avoid times when there is not enough water there at the dock to sail.

This page defaults to displaying -0.5' MLLW as the minimum amount of water needed at the club to operate the low tide skiff.

Sunday Dinghy Racers, fixed rudder dinghies, and the normal rescue skiff require at least 1.6' MLLW.

Tide times used in generating this table are estimates only. Wind can push water as well as sailboats across the Bay, and high pressure systems or reduced flow of water from Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta can push the water level down. Questions about whether or not there is enough water to open the club should only be resolved by measuring the actual water level. Peter Kuhn has thoughtfully nailed a windsurfing batten to the NW side of the third piling for that very purpose: if the bottom of that batten is showing when you've mentally averaged the wave crests and troughs, there's not enough water to go sailing. You can still put in a boat if the tide is rising, but don't expect to leave the dock. See also NOAA's predicted vs. observed tides page.

Remember that all boats are supposed to be back at the dock 40 minutes before a closure, whether that close is based on tide orunset.
